Congratulations to the Recipients of AMS 2020 Peace Seed Grants

SEPTEMBER 21, 2020—The AMS Peace & Social Justice Committee awards annual Peace Seed Grants to help fund projects that promote peace and social justice education. The grants are presented in memory of educator Ursula Thrush, whose dedication to the concept of peace and social justice through children inspired many to advance this education in their classrooms and communities.

Congratulations to the following recipients of the 2020 Peace & Social Justice Seed Grants.

Barbara Barnes, $550

North Star Montessori Preschool & Kindergarten in Jackson, MI, will build an outdoor Peace Performance Stage for students to partake in peace-themed performances and lessons.

Lara Bergman, $350

Heartwood Montessori School in Minneapolis, MN, will engage a network of local Montessori schools in Anti-Bias, Anti-Racist education and professional development.

Sarah LeValley, $500

The Child Unique Montessori School in Alameda, CA, will create a Peace as Social Justice guidebook which will be provided free-of-charge to Montessori and non-Montessori schools.

Michal Miller, $500

Oak Farm Montessori School in Avila, IN, offered their summer day camp farm program at a reduced rate to local students.

Sarah Pfenninger, $400

Mayfair Gardens Montessori School in Williamsville, NY, will purchase books for an after-school program where female students discuss activism and explore 3 overlooked local women leaders.

Cathy Schwartz & Monica Donnelly, $750

Baltimore Montessori Public Charter School in Baltimore, MD, will provide professional development, a parent equity group, and further steps to address equity gaps. 

Rita Sippel, $250

San Tan Montessori Charter School in Gilbert, AZ, will create a peace room and a peace library in which peace activities and resources will be provided.
