May 1, 2023—We are now accepting applications for individual members to serve a 3-year term on the newly formed Regional Action Commission. The application window has now closed.

About the AMS Regional Action Commission

The Regional Action Commission is the third formal commission of the American Montessori Society and was approved by the AMS Board of Directors in 2021. This new commission is designed to support the localization of Montessori and bring brand awareness to AMS.

Through these localization efforts, we look forward to enhancing member engagement, establishing leadership within the regions we are working, and expanding content to a national and eventually international level. We know this is a critical next step to strengthening the Montessori Movement and promoting the work of AMS.

Criteria for New Commission Members

The Commission will have at least six members, one from each geographic region: Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Pacific, Rocky Mountains, and Southwest, with the possibility of additional member(s) from non-contiguous states/regions. Each member will have served as an officer or active volunteer of a state organization and must hold an AMS-approved Montessori teacher or administrator credential. The Commission should reflect the diversity of the AMS membership. All Commissioners must be AMS members in good standing.

The following criteria will be considered when a new commission member is selected to be included on the slate presented to the board for approval:

  • Composition of current commissioners
  • Applicant’s expertise in regional activities and relations, including advocacy work
  • Applicant’s level of Montessori credential
  • Geographical representation
  • Previous volunteer experience
  • Evidenced dedication to and interest in AMS
